Community Food Festival – Hexthorpe Primary School
City of Doncaster Council’s Communities team and the local neighbourhood policing team were on hand to help at Hexthorpe Primary School’s Cultural Food Festival on Thursday 10 October.
After weeks of careful planning and organisation, more than 200 families came together to enjoy food from around the world once the school day had finished.
The idea, which had been used a year earlier, was to bring families and volunteers from the local community together in a joint love of cooking and eating.
On the day, 22 local people cooked delicacies - both sweet and savoury - from their home countries and regions of Britain for others to enjoy.
This included the preparation of more than 200 tasters of Spicy Chicken strips with fruit salsa and Derbyshire 3 cheese & chive straws. Both of which went down very well.
As well as preparing food and helping set up the communities team were there talking to families and giving out advice and other information and guidance on what services are on offer.
It was a fantastic event and with such a diverse community it was fabulous to bring so many people together in a shared interest and love of food.
Jeni Harrison, Head at Hexthorpe School, said: “Thanks to all those that took time and helped out, without their kindness this event couldn’t have happened.”
Mary, a mother of two pupils at Hexthorpe School said: “Wow what a lovely way to end the day, so many of us together, talking and laughing and enjoying everyone’s company. So proud of our children, the school, and the community of Hexthorpe.”
