Help if your rights are not being met

Under the Human Rights Act 1988, public bodies must respect and protect your human rights.

Your human rights

Public bodies are organisations like the government, local councils, the NHS and the police.

You might be able to take action under the Human Rights Act if you think you have been treated badly or unfairly by an organisation.

First you should try to talk to the person or people involved, or to their manager.

You should say what happened, when it happened and how it made you feel.

You should also say what you would like to happen next. For example, you might want the organisation to say sorry, or to review a decision that has been made.

If this does not help, you can make a formal complaint.

You can ask the organisation how to do this.

If this still does not help, you can take your complaint to another organisation, or take legal action.

It is a good idea to get some advice first.
