Learning For Life - a Remake Learning Days Pop-up

If you’re aged 16+ and want to get involved in a range of fun activities that will help you develop new skills and spark curiosity – then read on!

During National Careers week, starting on 3 March 2025, City of Doncaster Council is putting on a Learning for Life Week in Edlington. This event is taking place between the 3rd and 6th March 2025 covering a wide range of activities. This is our first Remake Learning Days pop-up solely focused on people 16+, so don’t miss out on this chance to learn more.

Develop skills and shape your career  

The purpose of these events is to offer local people aged 16+ the chance to be involved in activities that develop their skills and employability. There will also be an opportunity to find out more about working in local industries and finding a new career.

These activities will all be delivered in fun and interactive ways. There will be multiple free or low-cost activities for you attend, all ran by local organisations!

Throughout this week, there will be a number of exciting events to take part in right on your doorstep.

Monday 3 March

Explore Social Care

When: Monday 3 March 9:30am-12:30pm and 1:30pm-4:30pm

Who for: Anyone 16+
Cost: Free

Session details:

This event will be a drop-in session including interactive activities, such as: CPR Dummy, Oxygen levels via Pulse Oximeter, making thickened drinks to support people with swallowing difficulties who need a texture modified diet or fluids (IDDSI framework), Social Care TV bitesize e-learning courses – a wide range of courses available each approx. 20-40 minutes

We will also be able to provide information on:

Job roles and career opportunities in health and social care, Apprenticeships, Available training programmes, Current vacancies in social care

On this workshop you will learn the basics on how to set up and use a sewing machine which will open up a new world of opportunity to be able to progress into making and altering clothing and many other items. These workshops are designed to allow people an opportunity to try something new, learn a new skill, build confidence in a supportive and friendly environment.

Edlington Employment Pop-up

City of Doncaster Council is running an Employment Pop-up in Edlington open to anyone aged 16+. The event gives local people the chance to see what employment opportunities there are in Edlington and Doncaster. Speak to council services and employers such as:

This workshop is a follow up of the Learn to use a sewing machine workshop running on 3rd March.

In this workshop, you will go over the setup of your sewing machine and then learn how to cut out a pattern, how to cut out fabric and how to construct an enveloped back cushion cover, this workshop will teach you many skills required to make an item from scratch.

This is part of credited qualification programme that focuses on the practical application of key literacy skills. The course covers the following: 

  • Reading: - develop a range of skills for reading, understanding and comparing texts to enable learner to improve their confidence and study skills; engage with real situations in the real world. 
  • Writing: - Write documents to communicate information, ideas and opinions using formats and styles suitable for their purpose and audience, incudes extended writing pieces, which communicate information, ideas and opinions, effectively and persuasively. 
  • Speaking and Listening: - Prepare and take part in formal and informal discussions and presentations.

Pub Painting Acrylic Workshop

This Introductory session will guide participants through basic acrylic painting techniques. A professional artist will use demonstrations and introduce the technical aspects of painting with acrylics. Participants will be guided through the practical process of using acrylic paint, from laying out a palette to applying paint and composing a painting. All materials will be included, and participants will go home with their own painting.

Beginning with an activity evening on Thursday 6th March as part of National Careers Week, they will engage with young people aged 16-25 that would like to explore opportunities to volunteer and work in the Sport, Physical Activity and Leisure sector. 

This practical session will provide an informal, relaxed opportunity to have a go at coaching and take on some leadership challenges to promote skill development in teamwork, communication, organisational skills all through the medium of sport and physical activity.
